Driver of the Month April 2026 – Louie Paterson

Fight or flight: Paterson soars up the championship rankings

Earlier this week we caught up with a mainstay of Daytona Sandown Park, a driver on the precipice of lap records, championship and endurance titles. It is with great pleasure that we announce Louie Paterson as our Driver of the Month for April 2026. In a meandering conversation which touched upon the nitty gritty nuances of high-level racing, motocross lineage and even aeroplanes, Louie came across as humble and level-headed, with an immense commitment to his craft. In a journey spanning countless hours of racing, the best place to begin is naturally at the start.

Louie, now 20 years old, began racing, and we mean really racing, just last year. Beyond the odd practice session and childhood birthday party, he had little experience and no deep-rooted racing lineage, save for his dad, a passionate motocross rider. With a natural pull toward four wheels over two, Louie’s lifelong love for motorsport eventually led him to give take on karting. A visit to TeamSport Farnborough with a friend quickly turned interest into obsession, and before long he hankered for the greater speed and sharper competition that only outdoor kart racing can provide.

As a local lad, Daytona Sandown Park was the natural next step. When the friend he started with headed off to university, Louie was left to fend for himself, thrown into open sessions, learning the ropes against seasoned racers. It didn’t take long before he found his footing, embedding himself within the Daytona community and setting his sights on championship competition.

That progression has been rapid. This season, Louie sits P3 in the Thursday Night League SODI Heavyweight standing and is firmly in contention for the top spot, helped in no small part by a perfect score in the most recent round. He also secured a P3 finish in the latest SuperChamps DMAX Heavyweight round and has taken on the challenge of endurance racing, competing in the Daytona Sandown Park 3 Hour Endurance as well as the Daytona Milton Keynes Christmas Enduro.

Away from Daytona, Louie has been deliberately expanding his experience, racing in Club100 at Buckmore Park and with plans to tackle Bayford Meadows and Wilton Mill in the near future. It’s all part of a wider philosophy: to learn by doing, and just as importantly, by watching. Studying other drivers, both trackside and online, has become a key part of his development.

Despite his rapid rise, Louie remains grounded about his ambitions. While the dream of single-seater racing is there, he’s realistic about the challenges that come with starting later than most. For now, the focus is simple, keep improving, keep racing, and see what titles might come his way.

On track, Louie describes his style as patient and calculated. Rather than forcing moves, he prefers to wait for the right opportunity, working with drivers where possible and racing them when it matters. It’s a mature approach that reflects his understanding of race craft, knowing when a rival is a threat, when they’re an ally, and when it’s time to strike. That race intelligence extends across formats. In open races, Louie sees the opportunity to experiment and refine technique in a controlled environment. Championships demand a higher level of focus and composure under pressure, while endurance racing, his personal favourite, is all about patience, consistency, and timing. It’s no surprise he already has his sights set on bigger challenges, including pinnacle of UK endurance racing - the Daytona Milton Keynes 24 Hour.

Switching between SODI and DMAX machinery has only added to his versatility. Speaking of the intricacies of maintaining blistering lap times in both karts, Paterson says:

“In the SODI’s, it’s all about maintaining momentum, minimising braking and keeping revs high, whereas the DMAX rewards precision, with smoother throttle application and sharper inputs needed to get the front end to bite.”

Understanding these nuances has been key to his performances across both categories and truly highlights the time and consideration this up-and-coming driver has put into expanding his skillset and understanding the machinery which has carried him over the past year.

When it comes to Daytona Sandown Park specifically, Louie is clear on where races are won and lost. Mastering the technical sequence of turns six, seven and eight is crucial, as it sets up the run onto the straight, where speed, slipstream, and opportunity combine.

Off the track, Louie keeps himself sharp through running and gym work, focusing on endurance and overall fitness to handle the physical demands of racing. By day, he works in aviation data sales, a detail that perhaps explains his calm, analytical approach behind the wheel. Like many of his generation, his racing inspiration comes from Lewis Hamilton. Watching him dominate Formula 1 in his younger years left a lasting impression, one that has only deepened with age and a greater appreciation for the technical brilliance behind the success.

When asked what advice he would give to younger drivers, Louie’s answer reflects his own journey - be willing to learn, don’t compare yourself to others, and immerse yourself in the craft. Watch races, study lines and braking points, and take on feedback wherever you can find it. Progress, as he’s proven, comes quickly when you commit fully.

With strong results already under his belt, a growing presence across multiple championships, and a clear dedication to improvement, Louie Paterson is very much a driver on the rise. Whether it’s in championship racing, endurance events, or even single seaters, one thing is certain, he won’t be flying under the radar for much longer.
