McKenzie Takes Gold – From Surrey to California

McKenzie Takes Gold – From Surrey to California

From Bambino Inductions to the world stage

Racing out of Daytona Sandown Park, Ellis McKenzie is a familiar name to the Daytona community, known for his precise, clinical driving which proves results time and time again. Fresh off a Junior Light World Championship victory in the FKL in California, we caught up with McKenzie and his family to delve into his history at Daytona and highlight what drives this immense talent forward.

Ellis McKenzie first came to Daytona Sandown Park aged six to race in our Bambino programme. What started as a hobby, racing once or twice a year, soon began to snowball. After two Bambino Inductions and the occasional Practice session, karting paused during Covid, but in 2023 everything changed. Following a day-long Race School tuition at Daytona Sandown Park, Ellis stepped into competitive racing, joining the Junior InKart series where his talent began to truly emerge.

That summer marked a turning point. Early Sprint Races showed clear pace, but mistakes crept in. Over time, consistency followed speed, and by the latter stages of the 2023 InKart season, Ellis was climbing rapidly through the field. Racing in large, competitive grids accelerated his learning curve, helped by the strong community at Daytona, where drivers share feedback, discuss lines, and develop together.

Calm, measured and precise, Ellis’ driving style has been shaped by the variety of his racing experiences. In SODI karts, smoothness and precision are key; in DMAX, aggression and commitment through corners are required. That adaptability has been central to his success. Sandown Park became his training ground, a place he used consistently to prepare for national-level competition at Daytona and beyond.

In 2024, Ellis’ momentum continued. He finished Vice-Champion in the GKL Junior Light Pro category, claimed the GKL Shootout Golden Ticket, and set the current Daytona Sandown Park SODI lap record in April, a benchmark that still stands. He added SODI SuperChamps titles, Junior InKart and Junior Sprint League championships, and acceptance onto the inaugural Buckmore Park Driver Development Programme, while also impressing in national Club100 competition in his rookie season.

That progression culminated in 2025 with a breakthrough on the world stage. After winning the FKL Junior Light UK Pro Championship, Ellis travelled to California for the FKL Junior Light World Championship. Racing against 36 drivers from across the UK and USA, he qualified P2 before delivering a dominant performance: four P1 finishes and one P2 across Heats and Finals. The result secured him the Junior Light World Championship title and pole position in class.

The victory now opens the door to the next level. The Junior Light and Junior winners, alongside two wildcard entrants, will progress to an F4 shootout. This includes physical, reaction and media testing in the UK, simulator work, and a fully-fledged F4 test weekend in Spain. The overall winner will be awarded a fully funded F4 seat for 2026, a remarkable opportunity, and one Ellis is already preparing for through extensive simulator work, and of course, trips to visit friends and train at his home track – Daytona Sandown Park.

Alongside his world title, Ellis’ 2025 season highlights include:
– Club100 Junior Super Lightweight North Vice-Champion
– ADX 2025 Scholarship Winner
– Daytona Sandown Park DMAX SuperChamps 3rd (aged 14)
– Daytona Sandown Park DMAX Thursday Night League title contender
– Qualification for the Daytona Race of Champions in both SODI (2025) and DMAX (2026)

Despite competing nationally and internationally, Daytona Sandown Park remains central to Ellis’ journey. It’s where he learned race craft, consistency, and composure. Lessons that translated directly into championship success. His mindset reflects that grounding: stay calm, accept setbacks, and focus on long-term improvement rather than individual results, advice he recommends to up-and-coming drivers looking to follow in his footsteps.

As an arrive-and-drive racer rather than an owner karter, Ellis’ rise is a testament to commitment, adaptability, and making the most of every opportunity. Whether his next chapter leads to F4 or continued success in Daytona’s championships, one thing is certain, Daytona will always be a key part of his racing story and one we’re incredibly proud to champion.
